SunPower: An Adventure in Dumbfuckery and Reverse Engineering
In August 2024, SunPower Solar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving exactly zero support for their products or warranties—not that they were ever winning any customer service awards to begin with. Now that they’re out of the picture, I’m finally free to reverse-engineer the system (aka hack the crap out of this ridiculous setup) and unlock all the features I need to actually monitor and control what I paid for, without getting a lecture about “breaching proprietary tech.”
Let me just add: A few years back, I reached out to SunPower for support to access my own system as an admin, and their response was essentially “eat dirt,” followed by threats to cancel my warranty. This is a system I purchased and own, yet I wasn’t “allowed” to log in without paying a small fortune for some underqualified contractor to show up and tell me they didn’t know anything. If I own it, I should be able to actually use it, right?
OK, mini-rant over. This is going to be my “adventure” into accessing (and hacking if needed) the control computer for the system. Stay tuned …
